Paul Mengel is a seasoned trial attorney with over 25 years of experience in all aspects of civil litigation.  Mr. Mengel’s advocacy skills enable him to navigate PilieroMazza’s clients through the entire litigation process, from initial filing, through the discovery process, to resolution, either through judgment or settlement. While the primary focus of his litigation practice is in the state and federal courts of the metropolitan Washington area, he has litigated and arbitrated commercial disputes in judicial venues nationwide.

Mr. Mengel has substantial first-chair trial and appellate experience, successfully representing clients ranging from small businesses, government contractors and individuals, to Fortune 500 companies. He has obtained favorable verdicts and settlements for scores of clients across a broad spectrum of disputes, including business vs. business litigation, breach of contract, unfair competition, employment matters and all manner of tort claims. When a conflict lends itself to resolution through mediation or arbitration. Mr. Mengel’s trial experience enables him to place our clients in the best possible position for a favorable outcome and has successfully negotiated many complex commercial disputes through alternative dispute resolution. But when litigation is inevitable, he is a tenacious and efficient advocate for our clients' interests.

Representative Experience

   General Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution Experience:

  • Successful representation of businesses, including  a $650K summary judgment ruling in Virginia federal court in favor of our subcontractor client in a breach of contract action against the prime contractor
  • Won summary judgment in a case of first impression involving the Texas Rehabilitation Act and its application to independent contractors

   Employment Litigation Experience:

  • Won a trial verdict in Indiana state court in favor of our government contractor client, who had been sued by former employees for negligence, fraud and  wrongful termination
  • Defense of  national restaurant chain at trial and on appeal in significant race discrimination case which clarified Maryland state court standard for the award of punitive damages
  • Summary judgment in D.C. Superior Court for our client in a discrimination action brought by a former employee
