Senate Fails to Advance GOP Funding Bill for 9th Time as Government Shutdown Enters Day 16, CBS
The Senate failed to advance a House-passed GOP bill to fund the government for the ninth time on Wednesday, the 15th day of the government shutdown. The vote attracted no additional support from Democrats, who are demanding an extension of health care tax credits in exchange for their votes. Republicans need to convince five more senators to cross the aisle, a number that has remained unchanged since the start of the funding lapse. Read more here.

Revived Bill Aims to Ease Financial Strain on Federal Employees During Shutdown, Government Executive
Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., has reintroduced legislation by former Rep. Jennifer Wexton, D-Va., which would require regulators to issue new guidance to help prevent financial hardship for federal employees and contractors caused by budget impasse. Read more here.
Labor Department Looks to Pilot Intaking Unemployment Claims for States, NextGov/FCW
The Trump administration is planning to test the feasibility of the Labor Department doing unemployment claims intake instead of states, according to a late August email sent from the department to state unemployment insurance directors. The effort follows the department’s notice that it may create a national claims database, a move critics say raises cybersecurity, privacy and surveillance risks. Read more here.
